For Emma

My sweet daughter, Emma, turned 5 on June 4th. This is a long overdue letter to her.

Dear Emma,

You are oficially five years old. I really can't believe it! You have had quite a year!

You loved Pre-K. I will never forget that first day. When I left you , you were on an outdoor rocking horse. You rocked and rocked. I watched and watched (and cried and cried) as we drove away. Something about that broke my heart--but you never looked back. You learned so much! Not just letters and numbers, but life--like how to adapt-we somehow forgot your shoes one day. I'm not really sure how that happens and I felt pretty silly, but apparently it had happened before because they had shoes for you to borrow at school--but you were not at all happy about it. Since I was on my way to Target, I bought a new pair of shoes and drove them back to the school. Of course, you had adapted to the pair from school and wanted nothing to do with the new pair. For the rest of the year, you wore your green crocs--almost everyday. You loved those shoes. We just replaced them because your heels were hanging off the edge.

I couldn't have asked for a better teacher than Ms. Jenn. I think I liked her as much as you did. For much of the year, you would carry around a clipboard and play 'Ms. Jenn.' I am so glad that the D family recommended that school to us. God put them in our path at just the right time.

You "graduated" from Pre-K on June 10th (When I grew up, we only graduated once--from High School, but it looks like we are in for several of these). Your Mimi and Papa, Grandma and Grandpa, Cousins T and S, and Aunt and Uncle were there to celebrate with us. Now you are on to new adventures with Kindergarten just around the corner (God, help me!).

You attended BSF again with me this year and I have loved seeing you learn and grow. Through this, I have been inspired to take much more seriously how we treat the Word of God in our home and we have been much more intentional about teaching you at home (Thank God for JL, who invited me to BSF)--and what a joy it has been! You soak it up and it is a precious gift to be able to share God's Word with you.

You also love going to Disney World. We bought seasonal passes this year and have gone quite often. Bless your heart and praise the Lord, you love the Tomorrowland Transit Authority (better known as the WEDWay People Mover to those of us over 30) and the Carousel of Progress--you see, there are no lines for either of these.
However, you also love the new Toy Story Mania ride where we have not encountered short lines--but your Dad and I love it just as much as you. Nothing like a little friendly competition (He always wins). You have also taken a shine to the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular and even bought the action figure on our last trip.

Here's a few other tidbits from the year:

-You were an Astronaut for Halloween

-You love the High School Musical movies

-When you skin your knee-you refuse to walk for quite some time (down from last year, when you didn't walk for a couple of days and ended up gettin X-rays 'just in case').

-You guys got me a footbath for Mother's day, but I never get to use it, because you and your sister adore it.

-You love to listen to music and you are a pretty good singer. You picked out a Mandisa CD that I fell in love with also. You also like Travis Cottrell, Amy Grant and Casting Crowns.

-When I ask if you could please just stay little forever, you say "No, Mommy, God won't let me."

I love you so much. You are stubborn (where did you get that?) and can still pitch a royal fit (where did you get that?). But more than that, you are kind-hearted and sweet--and Emma, I love that you dare to be different. You pass up princess dress-up for Peter Pan. And no girly party for you, thank you. A cowboy party is more your style and you don't apologize for it. It's going a little bit too fast for me, but I love seeing you grow up. You'll always be my baby and I love you to the moon and back, to the stars and back, all around the world and back and to infinity and beyond.
